Wood you believe it? There is a face in the bark

IF you go down to Messing Woods, you could be in for a surprise – bumping into this character.

A visitor snapped this tree after spotting it in Messing Woods and realised it had a lot of lifelike qualities.

It is not clear if the image has appeared naturally or been cleverly carved into the bark, but “wooden” it be nice to know? The photograph was taken by Mick Badcock, from Tiptree.

The face in the bark is not the first time clear images have been depicted in unusual places or on everyday objects such as clouds and items of food.

In 1978, a New Mexican woman thought she had seen the face of Jesus made from burn marks on a tortilla, while in 2007 a callus was found on a tree which looked like a monkey.

People flocked to the tree to pay homage to the Monkey God, but it is not clear whether people will do the same for the unidentified Messing Man.
