AN optometrist from Colchester is set to represent his country in the Commonwealth Fencing Championships.

Belfast-born Richard, who lives in Wivenhoe, is heading to Australia this month**Sept** to represent Northern Ireland in both team and individual events.

And the 31-year-old, deputy head of optometry at Essex County Hospital, has paid the £2,500 cost of the trip to Melbourne himself as the only sponsorship he gets is free membership of the LA Fitness Health Club in Clarendon Way.
