Plug pulled on drive-in movies plan

PLANS to open a new drive-in cinema in north Essex have broken down.

Stanway-based Shining Light Events, in Colchester, had put together a three-day event in Langham Airfield for later this month.

But just over a week before they have made the decision to cancel due to poor sales.

The Colchester Drive In Movie Experience would have seen motorists enjoying classic films from the comfort of their cars, tuning in to the soundtrack through their radios.

The plan was to show Grease, Mamma Mia and Dirty Dancing over three nights from Friday September 10 to Sunday 12 in the Airfield, which has space for 230 cars.

James Owers, of Shining Light, said they had hoped to host children’s films at Christmas and, looking further ahead, had thought about introducing the technology to show a 3D film next summer.

Mr Owers said they had made the decision to cancel due to the economic uncertainty and poor sales with "great regret" and after long and careful consideration, adding those who had bought tickets would get a full refund.
