Police are warning pensioners in Corringham and Stanford-le-Hope to be on their guard after a con woman duped an elderly widow out of £150 of her savings.

The widow was in Corringham town centre when she was talked into accepting a lift from the woman who claimed to know her family.

The slick-talking con woman thoroughly confused the widow who is in her 80s and she ended up handing over the cash for a useless bit of carpet.

PC Sue Oldfield of Corringham police said: "The poor victim was thoroughly bamboozled by this woman, she didn't know whether she was coming or going.

"I think she handed over the money in the end just to get rid of her. All she received in return is a tatty piece of cord carpet.

"She is feeling humiliated and very embarrassed at the moment but luckily she has a very supportive family around her.

"We believe the con woman tried the same ruse on two elderly ladies in Stanford-le-Hope on the same day but fortunately they did not hand over any money.

"We would warn people not to buy anything from unsolicited callers. Elderly people especially should be careful who they allow into their homes."

The con woman was about 5ft tall, of medium build with long, dark curly hair. She was driving a green saloon, possibly a Rover.

PC Oldfield would like to hear from anyone who may have seen her and can give a better description or help to identify her. Information to Corringham police station on 01375-361212.
