Jamie's showing follows a successful summer tour.

Illness ends Bryan's match

Kent Elms player Bryan Bone was forced to concede his third set due to food poisoning.

Bryan and partner Jo Hancock played the first two sets against Leigh pairing Graham Rickard and Lisa Gordon when he was unable to continue.

The Elms duo won the first set 7-5, with Graham and Lisa claiming the second 6-4 and getting a 6-0 walkover in the deciding set.

Elms' Mandy White and Pat Taylor had earlier beaten Leigh's Wendy Thrale and Mark Taylor in the first rubber 6-4 6-1.

Simon eyes county call-up

Simon Bonham is in line for a call-up into the Essex for the Inter-County competition to be held at Cardiff in December.

He was unable to attend last week's selection session at the Southend Leisure and Tennis Centre, but will be at the Eastern Avenue venue on Saturday when the second trial will be held.

The team for Cardiff will be picked during the afternoon and will then have a practice session this month.

Helen falls at first hurdle

Basildon's Helen Crook crashed out of the LTA National Tennis Championships at Telford at the first round stage yesterday (Wednesday).

She was defeated 6-3 6-3 by Julie Pullin from Sussex, while fellow Essex player Sam Smith went down 6-4 6-4 to E Baltacha from Middlesex.

Helen made it through the quarter-finals of the LTALadies $25,000 tournament at Hull last week, where she lost 5-4 (5) 4-1 4-1 to Anna Keothavong from Middlesex.

Amy shines at summer finals

Up-and-coming teenager Amy Cockell has been crowned West-cliff Hardcourts' ladies singles summer champion.

The 16-year-old beat Tracey Chesher 6-4 6-2 to take the title at The Ridgeway club's belated finals day on Sunday.

Commentators who saw Amy's performance said it was clear that her daily training at the Sutton Tennis Centre in Surrey was paying dividends.

Amy is improving her game under the tutorage of world-ranked player Nick Wheal at the centre while studying for her A-levels at Cheam High School.

Nick has also been coaching Essex youngster Robert Gordon who took the under-18 and under-21 county LTA singles titles at the organisation's junior finals at Thorpe Bay this summer.

Simon Bonham's emergence as one of the best players in south-Essex was underlined when he beat Nick Plappert - a Hardcourts regular first teamer - 6-0 6-0 to claim the men's singles title.

And Simon was in action again in the mixed doubles, where he partnered Lance Owen.

But this time he had to settle for a losing finalist's trophy after the pair lost 3-6 7-5 6-3 in a hard-fought final to Richard Bonham and Mark Bertola.

The doubles final was declared null and void, while husband-and-wife team Tracey and Simon Chesher beat Juliette and Jeremy Harvey 6-2 1-6 6-2 to win the mixed doubles title.

The over-85 event was won by John Harris and Lance Owen, who defeated Trevor Stone and John Handelaar 6-4 6-2. This event is for pairs whose combined ages must be 85 years or more.

Hardcourts were forced to delay the finals due to the club's successes this summer.

Several players were called up by Essex for County Week duty in Eastbourne in July.

And Bonham, Barham, Plappert and Simon Chesher represented the Hardcourts in the National Singles League, where they fought their way through to the finals at Eastbourne in September. The team were knocked out at the quarter-final stage.

On top of her game - Amy Cockell claimed the ladies' singles title at Westcliff Hardcourts' summer finals
