Colchester might go without bus station for months

COLCHESTER’S new bus station might not be ready by the time the temporary town centre bus depot closes.

A leading borough councillor has admitted the town may have to go without a bus station for a time.

Residents will be consulted this autumn about the best option to cope with the closure of the temporary station, off Queen Street, in 2012.

Planners have suggested a new facility in Stanwell Street, but say it would not open until after 2012.

One short-term solution being considered is a two-way “bus interchange” in Head Street.

Tim Young, councillor responsible for street services, said: “We are concerned about the bus facilities and the bus station as it is.

“Head Street does look like a interim measure. There may be a period when there won’t be a bus station. We want that to be as short as possible.”

Mr Young was speaking to residents and councillors when he joined Alan Lindsay, Essex County Council’s senior transport planner, to talk about the future of the town’s transport system.

Mr Lindsay said both councils backed a phased approach to the bus station issue, as did local bus and taxi operators.

Phase one would be a two-way Head Street bus interchange, to be brought in between 2010 and 2012.

Phase two would be a new bus facility in Stanwell Street, to open sometime after 2012.

Derek Robinson, county councillor for Brightlingsea, criticised the existing facilities.

He said: “Elderly and disabled people from around the town have to stand like a cattle market in the High Street.

“Can you make sure we have a 21st century station?”

Colchester Council never had real plans for a Bus Station. Every potential developer refused to allow room for one. The Council's promise of "super stops" is another flight of fancy.
.
What we will get are simple bus stops scattered around the town centre. Everyone wanting to change buses will be forced to walk or catch a circulatory bus.
.
Already bus companies store half the buses overnight out of town because the Council has reduced the offstreet provision in order to develop the sites.
.
The Council believe that the VAF and the rest of the so called "Cultural" quarter will bring in the rich tourists. So who cares about the down trodden bus traveller - not the Council? In the Council's dream of a glorious glittering town centre there is no room for the ordinary people and especially not the disabled.

So we could be without a bus station for months and yet the cash is suddenly raised to complete that poxy VAF? Meanwhile, Councillers seem to struggle to understand why Colchester has one the fastest number of shop closures in Essex. I've got an idea Crosby - get rid of Tim Young and his wife who continue to leech the council of funding for use in stupid projects. I hear him bleeting about how amasing his department (and he) are but is the town any cleaner? No. Are people happy with the current recycling system? Hardly. And do the people of Colchester think that people like Young and his lot are doing anything for this town? Nope.
Something is seriously wrong with CBC and I'm sick to the back teeth of these hypocritical, lazy, vote leeches.

I struggle to think of anyone other than Tim Young who can get things so wrong for so long and still keep their job? Perhaps Young's next terrific idea will be to reinstate the bus lane at St. Botolphs?

What a good idea - then the buses will have to go via the new bus station in Stanwell Street.

I am appalled at the thought of no bus station, after 2012.
I have a facebook group that was publisised in the paper.
"Colchester must have a proper bus station"

Its growing in numbers to promote the idea of a proper bus station.

Dave, get to work on your party leader, tell him his acceptance of no bus station for a period of time is not good enough. The main guilty parties are Tim Young, Lyn Barton, Martin Hunt and Anne Turrell, who have failed to persuade ECC to let the present bus station continue until the new one is ready.
