Publicans warned over U’s clash with Millwall

PUB landlords have been warned to be aware of potential troublemakers ahead of the Millwall versus Colchester United match.

Groups of men known to be “risk supporters” are anticipated to arrive across the borough on Bank Holiday Monday, April 5.

Police have taken the unusual step of advising pub owners to contact officers if they believe such a group of supporters enters their premises.

The 1pm kick-off at the U’s Weston Homes Community Stadium is expected to fuel the problem, with supporters beginning their drinking early in the day and continuing into the evening.

Both teams are vying for promotion, which will add to the tension on and off the pitch.

Supt Iain Logan, from Colchester police, said: “We have no information to indicate there will be any disorder.

“However, it is an important game, particularly as Colchester will be in a potential play-off position and it is the bank holiday weekend.

“We are therefore expecting a large crowd.

“As a result of this, a significant number of officers will be deployed to ensure the event is memorable for the right reasons.

“Any incidents that occur will be dealt with swiftly and robustly. Any individual arrested and convicted of a football-related offence can also expect to receive a banning order from future games.”

Historically, there have been problems with Millwall fans, although the club has worked hard to improve its image in recent years.

However, trouble flared between hundreds of fans at the Millwall versus West Ham United clash in August.

Both fans were involved in disorder outside the ground and a man was stabbed.

l Anyone with information about any troublemakers, or who is concerned about the issue, is encouraged to call officers at Colchester police station on 0300 3334444.

Once again, the Gazette manages to trawl out a non-story. Remember the Norwich game, the predictions of violence and disorder? We'd have people running amok through the town. It didn't happen! Millwall have come to Colchester several times over the past years. Their fans are some of the best - they make a noise, they sing and support their team. The name conjures up scary images for some people, perhaps. This kind of story becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy if we end up with nervous policemen treating away fans like cattle, and a few local idiots coming out of their boxes.

The game with West Ham was a one-off. There is not the same history between Col U and Millwall as for that game.

This should be treated the same as any other game. It will be a good game, Millwall will help create a good atmosphere.

If anyone thinks Millwall fans are well known for their good behaviour then things have changed a great deal lately.

Your in cukoo land, they wrecked the buses last season by pushing out the back window and slashing seats on one of the buses.

Just got off the the dog after reading the above, looks like we've been sussed. Had a chat with Keith the Knife and Barry the Butcher about alternative plans if boozer's landlords are gonna grass us up. Sammy the Stabber and Harry Hatchet mentioned going to Aldi and swigging white lightning in the car park whilst Alan the Axe and Pete the Pistol smash up old women taking shopping to their cars.

Been told that all the local Colchester nutters are gonna be out in force, we're having a massive turnout for this one, Gary the Garroter and Robbie the Rapist have even managed to get day release from HMP for this one.
