THE keen Colchester United fan who bought the first season ticket for the U’s next campaign is urging the town to get behind the club.
Tom Haley, 32, a recycling worker from Holland-on-Sea, was the first to book a seat to watch his beloved team in the 2010-2011 season.
He said: “I went to the shop and the lady said I was the first one. That makes a change, as I’m usually the last!
“I have been to a few grounds and realised the Colchester fans are so much friendlier.
“The West Stand is a bit quiet, it needs something a bit more but the South Stand has a good atmosphere.”
Gates at the Community Stadium have been up 16 per cent this year on last season, but the ground’s 10,000 seats are rarely all taken.
With this is mind, Tom is urging more people to come along and support the team. He said: “They’re not getting the support, which is a shame because they’re a nice club.”
U’s have launched a voucher scheme for loyal fans, in association with the Gazette. When you buy a season ticket, you also get a booklet of vouchers giving money off goods and services from dozens of local businesses.
