Frederick is fed up with long wait for doctor

A PENSIONER has been waiting five months to be seen by a specialist at Colchester General Hospital because of staffing shortages.

Frederick Ratcliffe, of Peldon Road, Abberton, has been waiting see a doctor at the Turner Road hospital since October.

Colchester Hospital University NHS Foundation Trust says the staffing issues in the urology speciality have been resolved.

But, the 82-year-old is angry appointments were cancelled.

Mr Ratcliffe, who worked as a hospital porter for 25 years, said he was outraged when his follow-up appointment concerning a problem with his prostate was cancelled for the second time last month.

He said: “It seems as though my appointments are being put back, while others are put first.

“I know my appointment may not be as urgent as others, but I’m not getting any younger and I would like to get it out of the way.”

Mr Ratcliffe, who suffers from a number of health problems, including heart disease, says he was not given a reason for the cancellations.

He said: “That is why I am fed up – because you get letter after letter cancelling the appointment and they give no reason.

“Having worked for the health authority, I know they are good at massaging figures, but not very good at looking after people.”

Mr Ratcliffe is now due at the hospital tomorrow.

Julian Greaves, specialist surgery service manager, said: “We would like to apologise to Mr Ratcliffe for the unavoidable postponement of the follow-up out-patient appointments.

“These were both because of staffing issues in the urology speciality, which have now been resolved, and we look forward to seeing him later this week.”

I think that you will definitely find that, were Mr Ratcliffe a younger man, there would not be this 'problem'. They did the same to my dear old dad. It is these people who worked all their lives, paid their taxes and enabled the NHS to be.

I beg to differ with Sdapeze on this one. It has nothing to do with age.
I have a 30year old daughter ,covered from head to foot in seeping psoriasis and severe Psoriatic Arthritis. She is unable to move her limbs as they crack and bleed ,has no medication as usual treatments dont work and has seen this specialist before so is not exactly a first time patient. She cannot brush her hair as it bleeds , her life is a misery .She has waited 9 months to get appointment with specialist. She and her GP have tried to get appointment but she has had to wait .
I also had appointment for my son to see specialist last June which was cancelled . Hospital made new appt for Sept , which they then cancelled , another was made for November ...cancelled , January...cancelled . I threatened to go to media ,strangely enough an appt was made and kept for feb.
This is not exclusive to the elderly , it's all across the board . Manipulating figures to get a better rating. That's what this is about.

It just goes to show that it's not an isolated incident . Wonder how many others they are doing it to. Hope they sort the chap out though .It's very unfair to do this to an elderly chap.

When a case like fred's comes up,one can't help thinking there's discrimination;towar
ds the elderly.Unfortunatel
y,sometimes the local-media have to be consulted;to get your point across.I think it's under-staffing.
