Colchester County High School 's China day

ORIENTAL folk dancing and calligraphy were some of the classes pupils at a Colchester school got to grips with as part of a China Day.

Pupils at Colchester County High School for Girls had a taste of the Far East in deference to its links with Suzhou High School, in the Jiangsu region of China.

The specialist language school, in Norman Way, has been linked with its Asian counterpart through Essex County Council’s relationship with the Jiangsu region.

The day kicked off with a colourful Chinese Performance display by visitors from Suzhou High School, who are visiting the county.

They also put the girls through their paces in their other classes, which included having a go at Chinese Folk Dance and the main language, Mandarin, which is already taught to girls in the lower years.

Emma McClelland, specialism administrator, said the day had been so popular, it was likely it would become a regular feature of the school year.

She said: “We teach Imperial China in Year 7, which is why we thought it would be a good idea to do this day with Year 8, because they have some knowledge of the culture.

“The show in assembly was a brilliant way to start the day.

“There were women juggling umbrellas and dancing, and we have Chinese lanterns up all round the school.

“It is very bright and very colourful, and the visitors are really inspiring the girls.

“We had Chinese food for lunch with chopsticks – another challenge for the girls.”
