FREE trees will be on offer to Colchester residents.

More than 1,700 trees will be available to residents and community groups on January 23.

Nine primary schools in the borough will also be receiving free trees for every reception or Year 1 pupil who is starting school this academic year.

The trees have been specially selected by Colchester Council to attract wildlife including butterflies, hedgehogs and birds.

Deputy council leader Martin Hunt said: “This is a brilliant scheme, which will contribute to improving the environment, benefit local wildlife, and help to make Colchester a greener borough.”

The trees will be available first come first serve from the car park of Colchester Council’s offices at Rowan House, Sheepen Road on Saturday, January 23.

Up to three are available per household while community groups and parish councils can pick up to 20 trees from 10am to 3pm.
