CHRISTMAS spirit arrived in Colchester town centre, with the switch on of the town’s festive lights.
Hundreds of people joined the mayor of Colchester, U’s football players Magnus Okuonghae and Ashley Vincent, and of course Father Christmas to celebrate the occasion.
The lights in the High Street, Culver Square and Lion Walk shopping centre were all turned on.
The first lights went on in Culver Square at 4.15pm.
Members of the cast of the Mercury Theatre’s Christmas pantomime, Cinderella, then lead people to the High Street to switch the lights on there.
Nick and Kay White, 36 and 34 respectively, of Goring Road, Colchester, enjoyed the show with their four-year-old daughter Kelly.
Mr White said: “It’s been a very, very pleasant day.
“The lights could be more colourful, but I suppose they are subtle.”
Mr White’s wish for colour was soon granted.
A spectacular laser light show in the Lion Walk Church car park at 5pm had the crowd amazed.
Lion Walk shopping centre manager, Paul Bentham, told the crowd the light show was a thank you for their patience during recent refurbishment works to the centre.
Despite the laser show stopping half way through due to an electrical failure, the crowds of people were not deterred, and stayed for the switch on of the Lion Walk lights at 5.15pm.
