A COURAGEOUS mum has climbed a 4,200-metre mountain, despite having a degenerative back problem.

Karen Smith, 40, of Howards Croft, Mile End, Colchester, took on the 25-mile ascent along the Inca Trail, to the ancient city of Machu Picchu, in Peru.

She raised more than £4,000 for the Essex Air Ambulance through sponsorship and other events, such as a barn dance.

Mrs Smith had two discs removed from her back two years ago. She said: “It was fabulous, one of the best things I’ve ever done.”
