The Human Shrub - gardening's answer to Banksy?

THE Human Shrub has been labelled the “Banksy of the gardening world” ahead of an appearance at the Conservative Party Conference.

The green-fingered entity will join a gorilla, local councillors and shadow cabinet members to highlight the decline in planting and green spaces in new developments across the country.

The Human Shrub, who has yet to be officially identified, will do a spot of gardening as part of the Greening the UK campaign, in front of Manchester Town Hall tomorrow morning.

The appearance is likely to further claims by politicians from other parties that he is a Tory “plant”.

He said: “In the current climate, and in particular given the plight of the bees, it is utterly disgraceful there has been up to a 50 per cent decline in the amount of planting and green spaces actually delivered on new builds over the last decade.

“We need a radical approach to planting and all of the political humans need to unite and start implementing policies on this immediately.”

The shrub first appeared during “Shrubgate” and won international attention after he restocked planters which he felt needed more attention.

His concern for the plight of bees has resulted in him writing to and receiving a letter in return from Buckingham Palace.

The letter, written by correspondence officer Sonia Bonice, states the letter has been forward to Hilary Benn MP, the secretary of state for the environment, food and rural affairs, and Lord Mandelson.

It states “Her Majesty has taken careful note of your comments.”

Stop this nonsense now. Nobody cares. Why not concentrate on sorting out the VAF instead? I'm fed up to the back teeth of the petty points scoring between the different political factions in this town. There are bigger issues they need to deal with.

“Her Majesty has taken careful note of your comments” i.e. "Her Majesty couldn't give a ****".

At least the "Human Shrub" acted with the best of motives to encourage residents to plant up the abandoned borders. He has put Colchester on the map.

Unfortunately councillors still spend endless time bickering at meetings and posing for pictures in a border. Halstead only won its gold award by encouraging volunteers to help that Council.

Colchester Council refuses to follow this low cost route. I was told they would be planting up existing troughs "in the next few weeks". Hopefully they will put a few plants in the weedy and rubbish strewn outside courtyards of Angel Court.

The trough near Norman Way has been cleared, topped up with compost and a notice placed to say it is awaiting Council planting.

I am concentrating on the VAF - knock it down and sell off the scrap to buy more bulbs. End of bigger issue.

True. Perhaps we should sell them off for scrap also.

I never thought I would praise a Tory for anything. But the Human Shrub has been a good influence, even though he doesn't bother to water his freshly-planted flowers, so most of them have died.
With the winter coming, he could swap his gardening gloves for some aerosol cans, and give us some decent graffiti, in Banksy style. Tories clearly approve of graffiti so let's see what they can do around Colchester.
