In response to Richard Beauchamp (Gazette Letters September 9), he has sadly missed the whole point of my letter.

Bernard Jenkins, an elected member of Parliament, has claimed £50,000 of taxpayers money (yours and mine) for his second home. This second home belonged to his sister- in-law and the house was in Hatfield Peveral, which is not even within his constituency or anywhere near the House of Commons!

Second homes are meant to be used for those who need to stay in London overnight.

Last time I looked, Hatfield Peveral was some 55 miles from London.

It was in complete contravention of the rules and therefore he should repay the funds in full.

Tory Will Quince makes unintelligent comments about his aspirations around expenses, but strangely enough remains silent over his views on Bernard’s expenses.

Surely he agrees with me, as should Mr Beauchamp, that this money should be repaid with immediate effect, or do they agree that his behaviour was perfectly honourable and acceptable?

In the normal workplace such behaviour would have resulted in immediate dismissal for gross misconduct and a police investigation.

MARTIN GOSS Dickenson Road Colchester ...I WOULD like to make a point of clarification about my “Expenses Contract”

with Colchester.

I am the Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Colchester and I think people have a right to know how I would act regarding expenses if elected as their next Member of Parliament.

I find it astonishing that I am attacked by the Liberal Democrats for making a positive statement by outlining my expenses pledges.

I do not think that the Liberal Democrats here in Colchester “get it”. People are angry and when I speak with people in the town, their faith in politics is at an all time low.

I believe strongly in being open and transparent with local people and make no apology for laying my cards on the table and pledging publicly how I will act if elected as Colchester’s next Member of Parliament.
