The future's not so bright for this Indian restaurant

A CURRY house owner has been left with a bad taste in his mouth after council bigwigs ruled its sign was too bright to stomach.

Indian Ocean, previously Shimla Balti, in North Hill, Colchester, is to swap its orange sign for a cooler shade of blue after council planners and residents objected.

Colchester Council ruled the £2,000 sign was too colourful for the conservation area and promptly placed its order for it to be taken away.

Plans to replace it with a blue and white version with gold lettering are on the menu at the council’s next planning committee meeting on Thursday.

Two other shops are also causing the council upset, after shutters put up outside Buffalo Tradings, in Barrack Street, Colchester, and Hip Hop Heaven, in Eld Lane, were branded “intimidating”.

Koysorul Abedin, from Indian Ocean, said the spicy row had proved expensive.

He said: “It’s not good that we have had to spend all this money on changing it at the time of a recession, but we have no choice.

“We had wanted the new sign to be sky blue, like the water in the Indian Ocean.

“The council said it was not acceptable, so we have settled for a darker blue, which is much the same as what was there when it was Shimla Balti.”

However, critics say the new version will still be too colourful.

Colchester Civic Society said the blue would still be too garish, while Anthony Barker, of Roman Road, Colchester, said it would be no better than the existing orange.

Mr Barker said: “North Hill is one of our finest streets.

“Imagine what it would look like if that standard of garish sign was more general?”

Daniel Balamathina, owner of Buffalo Tradings, said he needed the shutters for security.

He added: “Other shops have similar shutters. I don’t know why the council is so concerned about this one.”

Alistair Day, Colchester Council’s interim design and heritage manager, said: “A shop front is an integral part of a building.

“The panels and signage and shutters are all elements which can have a detrimental impact on the surroundings if they are not treated appropriately.”

Unbelievable. The town is filthy, full of delapidated/abandone
d/half-built tips, a quarter of the shops are boarded up, and they fixate on the colour of a sign. Great priorities.

Was it not the same Colchester planners that allowed "The Big Yellow Storage Company" to paint their warehouse in such a garish colour? They won't take on the big boys!

Obviously Mr Barker you don't go up North Hill very often, it is hardly somewhere to brag about.

Leave the sign as it is and let the guy run his business.

It's garish and ugly just like the one opposite in the wine shop which must also go. I have no sympathy for people whoever they are who don't check whether something is acceptable before they spend their money. The difference by the way between this and the equally ugly big yellow warehouse is that North Hill is a conservation zone - the station roundabout clearly isn't.

I'm thinking of making a list to send to the council...entitled "100 more important things you could do for colchester, rather than whine and moan about a shop sign!"

Why are all of the comments in quotes?!!!

The first two comments, and the way in which the Gazette carried the story are sadly predictable. Gazette, why not carry the story with the headline "garish sign to go"? That would be positive, you can be positive you know - it is allowed! "Say it how it is" you actually said it how it isn't. The Big Yellow was won on appeal, and your comments about the attractive North Hill with its scores of listed buildings and majestic St. Peter's Church have no credibility. All of you, think before you write, and stop being so jaundiced!

It's equivalent of a £2k fine just because someone doesn't like the colour! The fact is this shop's frontage is always kept looking immaculate, something other businesses in town would do well to take heed of. I tihnk we should all order a meal from there this week! P.S. I'm not sure about the garrish red and white signage at 43 North Hill. :)

If it was McDonalds with a sign it would be okay. The owner may also need to drop a few quid into a few councilors pockets. This council need to look around East street and see what a S--t hole that is. Someone tries to brighten the town up and are victimised.

Markymarky - I was wondering, as the author of the "sadly predictable" first comment, why you think it "jaundiced" to suggest the Council should focus on much more urgent priorities. I live by the former barracks - now a large space of neglected, litter-strewn wasteland. The planned building work is postponed indefinitely. When I walk to Town Station in the mornings, it is along often very dirty streets. St Botolph's is a disgrace to the town. In the subway, the lighting and street furniture is smashed up. It's sometimes full of vagrants. Queen St/St Botolph's St are full of rotting old buildings/boarded up shops. Absolutely nothing is done about any of this. My neighbours and friends all say the same thing - the town is sadly run-down and looks in rather poor shape. I really don't think the colour of a shop sign is a big deal, especially, as others have pointed out, the owner makes an effort to keep the frontage clean.

The sign has been up for several months and the Council needs to find more important thing to do!

The council's priorities are screwed up. But what do you expect? This is Colchester after all.
