Seaside meeting place for bikers under threat

A POPULAR seaside meeting spot for bikers could be under threat after complaints from residents.

For years, Walton has been a favourite destination for motorcyclists heading to the coast.

But Frinton and Walton Town Council says parked bikes have sparked complaints about blocking the pavement, and it has asked Tendring Council to investigate.

Paul Barnes, whose seafront kiosk is a magnet to bikers from miles around, says any bid to prevent them coming to Walton would hit trade.

He said: “We have motorcyclists who have been coming to Walton and the Central Kiosk every weekend for the past five years and we’ve never had a single complaint.”

Walton and the Central Kiosk are featured on a number of websites as a top bikers’ destination.

In May, about 100 scooters and bikes parked along the seawall on Princes Esplanade for a get-together.

Mr Barnes said: “It goes on in every seaside town.

“In Poole, in Dorset, they have thousands of motorcycles every weekend and the council absolutely loves it and encourages it.

“We’ve always been bike-friendly and always will. We love motorbikes and we’ve got a huge reputation in the motorcycle world.

“We do the best we can to promote Walton as the top place for motorcycles to come to, and they don’t just come to Central Kiosk. They bring their families and shop in Walton.”

Mr Barnes insists the bikes park legally and don’t cause an obstruction.

Tendring Council says it will look into the matter.

Walton should take notes from Weston super Mare, they have a huge Bike Night once a week, a large dedicated Bike parking area and everything seems to go well. The town makes money and the bikers enjoy their hobby.

Pave over part of greensward on Frinton sea front for motorbike parking and put a cafe in as well. Then all the bikers can relocate to Frinton!

Job done, everybody happy?

Oh dear ....please keep the bikes in Walton. in Frinton we all try to sleep between 1 and 4 ...too much noise would be a problem. I will shut the barriers on Sunday just in case.

I'm one of the many bikers that head to Walton at the weekends to meet likeminded people and to spend some time (and money) at the seaside.
Everyone I've met parks sensibly along the promenade, infact if we didnt we would be leaving our bikes open to damage from passers by.

As to those making the complaints. I suggest you come and speak to us about your concerns yourself you'll find us a pretty amicable bunch and very friendly.

We ain't no trouble, ok we make a bit of a racket (and i suppose i shoot my mouth off to much) but by and large i'm just an old codger who wants to ride my scooter into Walton. Now they plan to stop us.
Well Frinton and Walton town council you haven't heard the last of me, i'm BUTTHEAD FROM THE BADLANDS and I'll throw a strop until you change your mind.

IT'S MY SCOOTER CLUB.
IT'S MY ESSEX COAST.

It is a very short sighted view by the council if they want to stop people coming to Walton. I occasionally take my bike down there and have never seen any problems. Walton needs visitors or it will die.
