Riverside Quarter scheme back on - with 40 homes going to council tenants

ANOTHER housing development in Colchester is finally getting off the ground again, after the Government agreed to give a grant of more than £2million, it has been revealed.

In May 2008, Persimmon Homes stopped work at its Riverside Quarter development, off Cowdray Avenue, because of the economic downturn.

A year on, talks with Colchester Council and Government agencies mean work on the 117 homes has resumed.

It has emerged twice as many of the homes on the site will now be in the affordable category – 56 instead of the 29 originally proposed – with most of these being offered for rent to families on the council housing list.

The change of heart has been prompted by a £2,169,015 grant from the Goverment’s Homes and Communities Agency.

As part of the deal, as many as 40 of the new homes will be rented to council-nominated tenants.

Beverley Oxford, Colchester councillor responsible for neighbourhoods, praised the deal with Persimmon and also the newly-announced Oakapple Close deal. She said: “The registered social landlord will probably manage it, but we have the nomination rights, so we’ll say who lives where. Both sites will go a long way to helping our housing need for people.”

Shame it's on a flood plain, when that river floods, many complants will happen, but it seems that these companies dont seem to learn that you shouldnt build homes on flood plains!

Anyone buying or renting one of these homes should be a competent swimmer and should keep an inflatable dinghy in an upstairs room.
I hope insurance companies will not insure these houses.

so the homes are built on flood plaines but it will help the council housing situation by giving Persimmon Homes £2,169,015 of our (tax payers) money. Council housing should be built in the cheapest way possible as it paid for by us and will not make any profit from rent. I am not sure that flood plain housing where it will probably mean more money going into helping the tennants when they are flooded out. I can almost see the winging and wining by tennants now. £2m of tax payers money well waisted into the pockets of the builders again! VAF revisited!

More houses that are doomed to be empty.

What a total waste of money.

I do think its right to be spending on capital projects in a time of reccession but what about spending it where it is really needed, ie on roads, continued updating of schools and hospital or even community sports facilites?

Better our money is spent on something that benefits everyone, not the new elite class that has emerged which go by the name of building developers!
