TWO students are hoping to become the latest internet sensation by poking fun at the MPs’ expenses scandal.

Daniel Stamp and Kerri Butcher, both students at Colchester Sixth Form College, have ridiculed the furore over parliamentary expense claims by posting a video on internet site Youtube.

The pair have uploaded a three-minute music video set to the Simon and Garfunkel tune Scarborough Fair, which they have renamed Parliament Square.

The lyrics parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme have also been changed to toilet seats, light bulbs and dog food.

It is one of scores of music videos to be created in recent weeks on the back of the public outcry over MPs’ expenses which has resulted in a number of politicians, including North Essex MP Bernard Jenkin, defending their claims.

Other popular hits include MPs Expenses – a Musical Guide which has attracted 27,123 hits on Youtube.

Daniel, 17, of School Close, Capel St Mary, who is planning to study politics at university, said: “We just wanted to take a comic look at the MPs’ expenses issue.

“I do agree it’s an outrage, but there is only so long you can be annoyed at them.

“I think the video shows there are still bigger problems in the world, such as North Korea and Iran, and maybe MPs’ expenses pales in comparison.”

Daniel travelled to Westminster with Kerri, 18, a media studies student at the college, who comes from Ipswich.

The duo filmed 19 minutes of footage in four hours which they then edited before posted the video online on Tuesday.

Daniel said: “We are hoping to generate hits.

“It’s a contemporary issue and students at the sixth form college might show it to a friend, who might show it to a friend, and who knows where it will go?

“But even if it isn’t popular we had fun making it and it would be nice if people found it as funny and interesting as we did.”
