WHAT do a holocaust survivor, an ex-dragon and a leading actress have in common?

Well, they are all about to receive honorary degrees from Essex University.

Dora Love, who survived a concentration camp, Doug Richard, one of the original panel members on the hit television series Dragons’ Den, and actress Juliet Stevenson will pick up degrees from the university at this summer’s graduation ceremonies.

They are following in the footsteps of honorary graduates such as Dame Helen Mirren, human rights campaigner Shami Chakrabarti, and Olympic swimmer Karen Pickering.

Dora was born in Lithuania and deported to the Stutthoff concentration camp, in what is now Poland, with her mother, sister and brother. All except Dora perished.

She now educates younger generations about the Holocaust.

Juliet Stevenson was born in Kelvedon, and is one of the country’s most prominent actresses, best known for her roles in Truly, Madly Deeply and Emma.

Doug Richard, who appeared in the first two series of Dragons’ Den, has been a successful entrepreneur for 20 years, specialising in the development and leadership of technology and software ventures in the US and the UK.

The three will be joining Essex’s other honorary graduands who are the university’s former vice-chancellor, professor Sir Ivor Crewe, internationally-renowned human rights lawyer Nuala Mole, telecommunications expert Neil McArthur and distinguished mathematical scientist Professor John Francis Toland.
