ONLY 1 per cent of people contacted about plans to build a new nuclear power station at Bradwell attended meetings to discuss the issue.

Figures released by EDF Energy, which ran community meetings throughout the Maldon district and in West Mersea, revealed that more than 25,000 people were notified about the possibility of a new power station with almost 250 turning up to talk to the expert.

Ian Bryant, planning manager for new builds, said: “Many of the questions were about the locality and the effect a new power station might have on the environ- ment, roads and local facilities.

“It was good to hear what were the primary issues for local people, so we can work their comments into any plans.

“We want to develop and maintain an excellent relationship with the community around Bradwell and it is crucial we work with them.”

EDF Energy plans to develop land next to the power station in Bradwell because it is a “good site for a new nuclear station” and “would boost the local economy and provide hundreds of permanent jobs over the next 60 years”, according to its monthly newsletter.
