TWO cyclists were lucky to escape serious injury after a hit-and-run near West Mersea.

The two men, both 43 and from Colchester, were cycling along Colchester Road, near to The Strood, at about 7.40am yesterday when the incident happened.

The driver of the vehicle, believed to be a silver 4X4 or pick-up truck, drove off without stopping. Police said the two men were lucky to only suffer cuts and bruises. After being treated in hospital they were allowed home.

The men’s mountain bikes were badly damaged. Investigating officer, Sgt Dave Cook, said: “It was a very callous act and the riders were extremely lucky to escape with only slight injuries.

“We also believe the driver of the pick-up was nearly involved in a head-on collision on the Causeway shortly before he struck the cyclists in Colchester Road.”
