More than 1,000 jobs are available in the Colchester area according to the latest release of figures.

Despite the increasing number of redundancies due to the economic slowdown, employers are still seeking to fill a wide range of roles.

Jobcentre Plus for Colchester currently has 1,283 vacancies listed, according to the Department of Work and Pensions.

Workers could earn £85 per day as a driver/labourer, £6.50 per hour as a sales assistant, £25,000 a year as a human resources officer, £21,000 a year as a warehouse manager or £22,500 a year as an NVQ assessor.

Other businesses looking for recruits include a home improvement company looking for more than 30 staff ranging from canvassers and leaflet distributors, to drivers and promotions staff.

But the number of unemployed people in Colchester has jumped by 49 per cent since December 2007, according to figures obtained by Will Quince, the town’s prospective parliamentary candidate for the Conservative Party.

This figure exceeds the national average of 34 per cent.

Mr Quince said: “We must not forget that these are not just statistics but people.

“It clearly demonstrates that no area is immune from the current economic crisis.”

In the UK, 1,056,145 are unemployed.
