North Essex: veteran councillor Roy Smith quits party

THE chairman of Tendring Council has quit his political party.

Roy Smith and his Golf Green ward colleague Kevin Watson say an ongoing difference of opinion with Community Representatives Party leader Steven Henderson has prompted the split.

Mr Henderson has called on the Jaywick pair, who have not decided which group to join, to hold a by-election.

“If they believe they’ve got the full support of their ward then I challenge them to stand against a Community Rep,” he said.

“I would also ask them to pay back the party the election expenses and the cost of replacing Kevin Watson as an officer.”

It is understood the row has stemmed from the voting patterns of Mr Smith and Mr Watson at full council meetings.

The Community Representatives pride themselves on voting on personal preference, not on party lines.

Mr Smith and Mr Watson have often sided with the Tendring First, Liberal Democrat, Labour and Independent group administration.

Meanwhile, they have cited a lack of support from Mr Henderson and fellow Community Representatives John Brown and Dave Rutson.

Mr Watson said: “With our differences at full council and most of Tendring Council policy, we are finding it most difficult to carry on in this situation.

“We have talked about this action for some time with the leader of the Community Representatives Party and have decided to leave.

“We hope it will improve the quality of care for all the residents we serve.”

Mr Henderson, who represents the Harwich West Central ward, said the defection was no surprise as the pair have threatened to walk out more than once over the past year.

He denied there was a difference over policy because Community Reps have the autonomy to vote whichever way they want.

“All year we’ve supported Roy as chairman,” said Mr Henderson.

“I was offered the post, but I put him there.

“He owes more than I owe him.

“It is a kick in the teeth at Christmas for the Community Reps.”

Whats going on with that party? 3 town councillors left just a few months back. They seem to have gone from having all the power at both town and district level to having none.

Perhaps there is more to all of this than is being said in public.

Steven Henderson's comment that Roy owes him more than he owes Roy is probably the most indicative spatement in the piece and proves that none concerned are looking after the electorate, only themselves.

The Community Reps are surely not a political party are they?

Whatever he might have done for the area, it still does not change the fact he was reponsible for Radio One stopping the Road Show coming to Clacton.

Lets not forget that this was an event that attracted something like 15000 - 25000 people into the town.

Needless to say he never raised the same objections to TDC holding their airshow on the same bit of ground, something which causes much more problems with parking and over a longer period of time.

If anyone man has contributed more to making this town youngster unfriendly its Roy Smith.

But worse than that by his own inconsistency over the issue I have raised he has shown himself to be guilty of being a hypocrite of the first order.

Ok, you have all had a go at this piece now, so its my turn now.

we read of all the good that Cllr Smith has done for jaywick over the last 30 or so years...

He has overseen his ward being nationaly acclaimed as being the 3rd worst deprived area in England, all this while being the chair of tendrings council.
he, alongside Cllr Watson are walking out on their elected obligations.
are they therefore now subject to Golf Green residents having a local bye election, to re appoint local serving ward councillors.
if you was to ask many local residents what HAS the odd couple achieved of late, for their residents, it would be hard to find an answer.
If you want to move on and face the rest of the world councillors, fine, but ship jumping hobbies of ex labour supporter Roy Smith in 2001 are becoming a bit of an embarrasment i would think.
Labour party Golf green till 2001.
Community Representatives 2001 - 2008.
whats next in his wanderings around various parties.
the first tendring bus company are looking for lost souls i have learned.
In olden days of cowboys,
for everyone opponent "done away" with, you put a notch of your tool of trade,
has Cllr Smith got room for anymore notches, or is it role reversal at long last...
Give it up Cllr`s Smith and Watson, your not no longer wanted.

Ah Mark from St Osyth, why pray does telling the truth about someone make them a bully and a coward?

I am afraid to say that all I have posted are the facts.

If you delve back through the Gazette archives you will come across them exactly as I have reported them.

So are you scared of the truth or just trying to deny it?

Either way it is not going to change the facts, Roy Smith was responsible for Radio One pulling the plug on the roadshow coming to Clacton and through that rather hypocritical decision cost business' in this town tens of thousands of pounds in lost revenue.

Like it or lump it, the facts aren't going to change through petty name calling.
