Colchester: council 'cash on delivery' idea is rejected

A OFFER by a councillor to take a pay cut if he fails to deliver has been rejected by his colleagues.

Colchester Council business supremo Paul Smith volunteered to be the “guinea pig” for a scheme which would have seen £1,200 a year docked from his special responsibility allowance – and only paid back if he performed well in the role.

He suggested that the initiative, which mirrors the performance-related pay arrangements for senior staff, could be extended to other cabinet members if it proved a success.

Last night, the proposal was thrown out as “unworkable” by the council’s strategic overview and scrutiny panel, which Mr Smith (Lib Dem, St John’s) had wanted to take charge of deciding whether he deserved his full allowance.

Several councillors said they supported the idea in principle but argued it would be too difficult to figure out whether he had done well or badly over the course of a year.

No surprise it wasn't supported by his colleagues - bit like asking turkeys to vote for Christmas really!

This proposal was a gimmick and a piece of spin to divert people away from the issues.

I agree with RED TAPE it was a bit like asking turkeys to vote for Christmas.

We have a few full career politicians in the cabinet and in council who depend 100% on their council income.

They couldn't hack it in the real world where people are paid on the basis of productivity and efficiency.

Yet these same hypocrites keep harking on about higher targets for effeciency and productivity.

It is one rule for ordinary workers and another rule for politicans.

We need to sack at least 50% of the council - 30 councillors are plenty sufficient to get the job done and we need some sackings and resignations over the VAF and the other messups that have cost Colchester tax payers millions of pounds.

It is only fair that if people are losing their jobs that the politicans who lose us money should lose their council seats.

I think the councillors might argue that unlike guyfawkes and other carpers they vare elected and in the same way can be removed. Wouldn't stand much chance of getting elected with a name like guyfawkes though.

That sounds very racist and discrimatory to me Cliff.

You sound like a racist, nasty and ofensive to me Cliff.

Cobblers, Guy Fawkes was a terrorist who tried to burn down Parliament - that's got nothing to do with racism, discriminatio
n, offensiveness or nastiness. You're getting confused with your postings on the BNP

So according to you because my name is Guy Fawkes and for that reason only you believe that I wouldn't be elected.

That is racist and anti-catholic.

The same arguments were raised during the recent election against Barak Hussein Obama. The Republicans were trying to do what you are doing now - by using racist and abusive language against his colour and his religion.

You Cliff have become what you once say you hated - a racist. Just like the pigs on Animal Farm - you now say four legs bad, two legs good.

Cliff you are a racist.
