A BUSINESSMAN is hoping a major project to revamp a nightclub and build a new bingo hall will bring a welcome boost to trade in a struggling town centre.

Steve Brennan, manager of the Basement Nightclub, in Kingsway, Dovercourt, is hoping the major refurbishment project will create about 20 new jobs and encourage people to stay in the town for their evening’s entertainment instead of venturing further afield.

Harwich and Dovercourt’s only nightclub is undergoing the major facelift after the owners of the Geisha Hotel and Nightclub, in Clacton, bought the site.

Plans are also under way to get a 200-seater bingo hall built on the site of the old Hustler Snooker Club, above the underground nightclub.

Mr Brennan said: “It is a really positive thing for the town and it will definitely boost trade.

“At the moment, all the Harwich people are going to Colchester or Clacton for their nights out, but if they can spend money in their home town it will be fantastic.”

He added: “We are going to need cashiers, bar staff and night time staff, all of who will be 100 per cent employed from the local area.”

The nightclub will be closed from November 2, and will be re-launched on November 14.
