WORKS are progressing on the offshore construction of a wind farm off Clacton.

Danish energy giant Dong Energy is building the 48 turbines wind farm on Gunfleet Sands, 7km off the resort.

A 13,600 tonne crane barge, Svanen, is currently being used to drive 40m-long monopiles into the seabed with a hydraulic hammer.

The monopiles are then mounted with yellow-coloured transition pieces – on top of which the turbines will be installed at a later date.

Peter Sills, communications manager for the Gunfleet Sands Offshore Wind Farm, said: “The crane barge is in position and that moves around the site.

“It is currently installing some of the turbines in the fifth row of the wind farm, so there will be more in front of those.
