Campaigners opposed to the expansion of Stansted have welcomed Conservative leader David Cameron’s confirmation of his party’s opposition to a second runway at the Essex airport.

Mr Cameron made his announcement during a television interview at the Conservative Party’s conference in Birmingham – reiterating his party’s stance, first announced in March last year.

He said: “We’ve never supported plans for a second runway at Stansted. What we support is the high-speed rail link option from London to Birmingham and Manchester, which we think would radically reduce the number of internal flights and take the pressure off airport expansion.”

Stop Stansted Expansion campaign director Carol Barbone, its campaign director, said: “The Conservatives have long acknowledged that Stansted, as a leisure airport, is not of any strategic importance to the UK economy. Nevertheless, to have confirmation from the party leader is highly significant for our campaign".

Build the second runway. By the way, I fly out of Stansted on business all the time as do many others - calling it a leisure airport is plain incorrect. But I's expect nothing more from the NIMBY group up in arms about this.

How many flights from Stansted go to Birmingham and Manchester?

Aviation fuel is now expensive so cheap flights will soon be a distant memory. Also no doubt they will ramp up the taxes on flights in the future. Ryanair, the main users of Stansted, have cut a lot of flights from their schedules.
Like Norm I have made countless business flights from Stansted, and many leisure flights too, but there is no need for any more air traffic at Stansted than there is at the moment. Therefore there is no need for a second runway.
I could never bring myself to vote Tory but I am starting to think it won't be so bad if they take power in 2010.

I always think that Cameron's hair is too floppy for him to be PM. No one would take him seriously with his floppy hair.
