A public inquiry into a proposed Tesco in Manningtree could be held even if the store was given planning permission, the Gazette can reveal.
Officials from the Department for Communities and Local Government have confirmed the news today.
Tendring Council’s planning committee is due to approve or turn down the application in the autumn.
But the latest news means that, even if the committee gives the store approval, it would be referred to the Secretary of State, Hazel Blears, who could call for the inquiry.
North Essex MP Bernard Jenkin welcomed the news.
Last month he called for a public inquiry into the application.
Nigel Brown, Tendring Council’s communications manager, said the Tesco application involves a major development within a flood zone and there has already been considerable representation from the Environment Agency on the issue.
“We are well aware that should council members decide in favour of the application it would need to be referred to the Secretary of State,” he said.
