Plans to open a new supermarket – believed to be Waitrose – in Colchester have been lodged.

An application for the former Glyn Webb store site in St Andrew’s Avenue has been submitted to Colchester Council.

It is being recommended for approval by the council’s planning officers.

The plans are believed to have been drawn up by Waitrose and, if they win approval, the new supermarket would be Waitrose’s biggest food store in the country. The plans would also include a coffee shop.

DIY store Glyn Webb closed its Colchester store shortly before its parent company folded in September 2006.

A spokesman for Waitrose declined to comment, although it is understood the firm is due to confirm its involvement before next Thursday’s Colchester Council planning meeting.
