Ships could be forced to stay at least 500 metres from an offshore wind farm during its construction, amid fears about falling objects.

Work to install 56 wind turbines at Gunfleet Sands, about four nautical miles off Clacton, is set to start in September.

Dong Energy wants to make sure passing vessels are not hit by stray items falling from the 80-metre-plus pylons and sightseers trying to get a closer look at the turbines do not collide with construction traffic.

It also wants to ensure the area is left clear for lifeboats and other rescue ships.

It has applied for a 500m safety zone bordering the vast construction site (more than about 150,000 sq metres/15 hectares).

Craft venturing too close to the site will be intercepted.

Consultation on the safety zone ends on August 15.

This really does say that you can't come within 500 metres in case something falls on you. If an object travels horizontally for 500 metres after being dropped I think the construction should be searched for missile launchers.

I nearly applied for an exclusion zone for ships around my house when I built the new porch in case I dropped a brick or tile and it flew 500m horizontally. Then I realised I don't live near the sea, so I didn't.

Are you ducking mad, or is it for real.
500 metres safety zone, ok, what they gonna do about it, send a swimmer out with fixed penalty notice, a slap on the wrist, and a terrible telling off, not to ever do it again, or will they have a redundant warship at anchor, for justin case.

Who is going to tell all the birds and the sea creatures?

Maybe waterproof signs can be placed appropriately.
