COLCHESTER is to become a pioneering "cycling town" after winning millions of pounds of funding.

About £2.1 million of Government cash will be matched by local authorities in a bid to dramatically increase the number of cyclists using Colchester's streets.

The bid, led by keen cyclists in the borough and backed by Colchester Council and Essex County Council, is one of 11 selected by Cycling England from a shortlist of 73 towns and cities across the country.

Transport minister Jim Fitzpatrick was today set to make the official announcement at the town's North Station.

Bid leaders are due to meet with Cycling England in Birmingham today to finalise the details but the bid included three components to help meet a target of having a car-free town centre by 2020.

Pam Nelson from the Colchester Cycling Campaign, said she was delighted with the news, and spoke of her desire to turn Colchester into a place like Copenhagen, where cycling is seen as fashionable.

"I'm just really thrilled about it," she said.

"We've put an awful lot of work into it, but the hard work has yet to come.

"I think the unusual thing about our bid is that it was us as the local cycling community who approached the authorities and said we have got to go for this funding."

Alongside a campaign to make cycling more appealing, the funds are to be used to improve infrastructure in the town centre and to offer potential cyclists lessons to increase their confidence.

Well let's hope that common sense will be the order of the day when the money is spent. No more bits of green tarmac down the side of the road but proper, SAFE, cycleways which would encourage people to use bicycles.

As for making it a car free town centre - don't forget that Colchester is very hilly in parts which will be huge disincentive to using cycles but we should be able to make the flatter residential areas much more cycle friendly.

This is great news. Hopefully it will result in cycle routes being made safer. In turn, this should persuade more people to cycle, thus reducing congestion, air pollution and carbon emissions!

I would love to see the day when all the cycle paths actually join up and you can avoid using the roads completely.

Hopefully cyclists will use the proper designated areas!

On Monday evening after sunset, coming along by the Cowdray Centre junction, a cyclist jumped a red light, and carried along the main road. He was wearing dark clothing, and had no lights.

He continued towards Ipswich Road roundabout, causing cars to swerve and brake suddenly.

All this was no more than 10 feet from the designated cycle track the other side of the grass verge.

Cycle tracks – a great idea. Cyclists, well that’s another story…..

This is great. Hopefully we can now eradicate the sudden change from cycle to pedestrian paths i.e. Ipswich Rd. and St. Andrews Ave to mention but two.

does this cycling town cover unicycles If so, COOOOOOL! It would be cool if more people cycled and unicycled, will it provide more places to ride? (hope so)
Also, with cycling, its better for you, more fun and means there are less cars in town.

Would anyone be up for a unicycle club? It improves balance, self esteem and means you can cycle and carry all your shopping! It's great!
