A former primary school is believed to have been destroyed by a huge fire.

Five crews of firefighters were sent to the blaze at the old Harwich Community Primary School and Nursery, in Main Road, Harwich.

Flames engulfed the two-storey building at about 4.15am, waking residents in the surrounding area.

It took firefighters two hours to put out the blaze, but crews are still on scene damping down.

An investigation is underway into the cause of the fire.

How can it be 'believed to have been destroyed'? Surely sending a reporter to have a quick look will solve that mystery?

Maybe it was struck by lightening in the storm last night???

Perhaps I can get a job as a reporter as I actually went to have a look and I know that part of it 'has' been destroyed. The road was still closed at about 2pm this afternoon and there were firefighters still there, gas men and some structual engineers had just turned up. Road traffic was diverted round Barrack Lane and Harbour Crescent.

I'm guessing the reporter hadn't even been to Harwich to check when they wrote this, which is what we have come to expect.

On a personal note I think its a shame that such a nice building has ended up like this. I know it had been left for a long time and the windows were either smashed or boarded up but it was such an interesting building to go in when it was a school.

Thank you for your kind words. However I don't think there is any need to sack Emily. She can make the tea for all of us instead.

This was just bound to happen sooner or later the building has been left empty for the last 2 or 3 years. Vandals had already smashed most of the windows and sprayed graffiti everywhere. Maybe if the council had payed more attention and done more to protect the building this would never had happend.

God I am going to sound anal for knowing this but it's actually been unused for over 5 years. Other than when the police have used it for training with their police dogs.
