The horticultural efforts of a keen local golfer will help bring a ray of sunshine to dementia patients at Llandudno Hospital.

Fundraiser Barbara Jennison has donated £2,000 to the hospital’s dementia fund, raised through selling plants grown in her West Shore garden.

The donation will fund a digital skylight for the hospital’s Aberconwy Ward, which will help stimulate patients in the hospital with dementia.

Barbara, a former lady captain at North Wales Golf Club, began selling flowers and plants grown in her garden on Church Crescent five years ago, donating the money to dementia charities.

Over the last year, she and her partner Howard have sold more than 2,000 plants, all grown from seed from their garden.

The generous donation will add to resources available at the hospital which improve the quality of life of patients living with dementia.

Barbara said: “So many people are getting dementia now, even young people. We just wanted to do something to support people living with it.

“I’d read about the work Llandudno Hospital is doing to support patients with dementia and wanted to do something to help.

“In my first year as the lady captain at the golf club we held an open day and won a prize for the best garden. After that first year we bought some perennial plants, and it’s grown from there really.

“We arrange flower sales through Facebook, but we are always found in our garden and welcome anyone who’s passing by to have a look around and see what we have in return for a donation.

“They’re all grown in our conservatory and what I call our lean-to, and we do all the potting in our garage.”

Amanda Lloyd, Dementia Support Worker at the Hospital, said: “The support from people like Barbara is really vital in helping us do all we can to support people living with dementia.

“This donation will fund a digital skylight, which we will put into one of the side-rooms on Aberconwy Ward. The screen replicates a clear, sunny blue sky, which will brighten up what is otherwise a fairly dull room.

“More importantly though, it’ll give us an opportunity to spark up conversation with patients – such as talking about summer holiday’s they’ve had, or memories of bright days from their past.

“Studies have shown how encouraging people with dementia to recall treasured memories has a number of benefits to helping them live with the condition, and this will be another invaluable resource to improve the quality of life of people within our care.”

This year, Llandudno Hospital became the first hospital in North Wales to receive a national accreditation celebrating its efforts to support patients with dementia. The hospital achieved the “Working Towards Dementia Friendly” accreditation in recognition of its efforts to support people living with the condition.
