The Colchester theatre’s Studio space is being put to good use while Babe tears up the Main Stage with the second of the season’s films the brilliant, and very apt at the moment, Some Like It Hot. Starring Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis and Marilyn Monroe in one of her most iconic roles, the series continues next weekend with Once Upon a Time in the West and then ends with Sunset Boulevard.

And talking of everyone’s favourite sheep herding pig, this production is proving to be the Colchester theatre’s best one yet with plenty of fun, laughs and songs.

3. Summer Open Exhibition, The Minories Galleries, High Street, Colchester, until August 29, from 10am, Free. 01206 812437.

The Colchester Art Society’s first proper open show in that everyone who submitted an appropriate work of art has been given the chance to exhibit it. Who knows what the opportunity might lead to. Perhaps the discovery of the area’s next John Constable or Francis Bacon.

Highlights this month include When Rivers Meet, Harewood, a recently formed, subtle and graceful flute and guitar duo and old SlackFolk favourites Bitz n’ Pieces, with Irena’s beautiful vocals and Fred’s funky keyboards.

And something a little bit different for the start of the week with a real coup for local promoter Paper Champion in getting Chicago based Space Blood to play one of their last ever gigs in our little old town. Expect math rock influences and theatrics.
