SCHOOL pupils and staff are celebrating after £1,000 was raised to buy a new piece of life-saving kit.

Myland Community Primary School Year Six pupils visited The Oaks Hospital to learn two key areas of first aid, with each pupils paying £2 for the privilege, raising £90.

However, a JustGiving page set up by the hospital saw the £1,000 need for a defibrillator raised with kind donations.

And on Tuesday, the machine was officially handed over to the school.

Jo Farthing, business manager at the Mill Road school, said: "We are over the moon.

"To have a piece of kit like this is very important.

"We have some children with heart problems so having something like this on site is really important."

Mrs Farthing also said she wanted the wider Mile End community to know the defibrillator is on site, in case it is ever needed.

She added "We've got the playground just across the road as well so the more people who know we have this here, the better."
