POLICE officers from around the country who had been staying in the Colchester Garrison gym whilst working as part of the Presidential security operation have been moved to hotels across the east, it is understood.

The Gazette understands the officers, who were able to claim an allowance of up to £80-per-night while stationed at the Garrison, were moved to hotels, some of which are 90 minutes away from where officers are stationed to work.

Once the officers were moved, that allowance dropped to £50 per night.

After pictures emerged on social media from angry officers yesterday, a National Police Chiefs Council statement said: “Some of the accommodation pictured for officers supporting the major operation for the US Presidential visit is not acceptable and below the standard of other accommodation for this operation.”

Essex Police is working at speed to resolve the issues for the affected officers.”

An Essex Police spokesman said today: “Essex Police was responsible for making accommodation arrangements for officers coming to Essex to support the operation. All affected officers will be accommodated elsewhere in Essex for the remainder of the operation.”

President Trump arrived in Stansted yesterday, is meeting with Prime Minister Theresa May to discuss her Brexit plans today, followed by tea with the Queen in Windsor.

He will fly to Scotland tomorrow.
