FIVE schools took to the stage as part of a programme promoting the joy of opera.

Two performances were held at the Mercury Theatre in Colchester.

Brinkley Grove School, Boxted Primary School, Bradfield Primary School, Myland Community Primary School and St John’s Green Primary School all took part.

They performed the Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe and then Price Caspian, both by C S Lewis, with the help of the Opera Brava company.

More than 200 students took part.

Essex Music Services, part of Essex County Council, helped deliver the programme.

The children trained to sing, experience acting and perform in a professional environment, creating the costumes and being stage managers.

Peter Lovell, schools curriculum standards and developments lead officer, said: “We were delighted to offer this memorable experience to many children with the unique opportunity to work with a professional team and perform at the Mercury Theatre.

“This is the first time the service has partnered with Opera Brava.

“We would like to thank teachers, children, the Mercury and Opera Brava for helping create this memory for the children.”
