CELEBRATIONS spilled out on to the streets again as jubilant football fans marked England’s biggest win at a major tournament.

Hundreds of people who had been watching the Three Lions 6-1 victory over Panama on Sunday afternoon in Colchester town centre flocked to Head Street to carry on the party.

Many of the supporters had been watching the game in nearby Walkabout but some travelled from other pubs and bars to join in the celebrations.

England ran out comfortable winners over the Central American minnows thanks to a hat-trick from star striker Harry Kane, an unlikely double from centre half John Stones and a stunning strike from midfielder Jesse Lingard.

The result means England are guaranteed to get through the group stage and will battle it out with Belgium on Thursday to determine who finishes first or second.

Inflatable beachballs were sent flying in the air as the fans sang anthems including the classic Football’s Coming Home by Frank Skinner, David Baddiel and the Lightning Seeds.

The road was shut to traffic but crowds parted to allow a fire engine to make its way down the street as security staff helped smooth its journey through the throng.

A spokesman for Essex Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the crew were on their way back to the station in Cowdray Avenue after a call out when they made their way through.

They said there had been no complaints about the behaviour of the fans as they passed through.

The trend for impromptu street parties began last week when fans celebrated in the road after England’s late winner against Tunisia.

Colchester Council safety boss Mike Lilley (Lab) said he was all for people celebrating the result but warned against clogging up crucial town centre roads and asked people to try to confine the celebrations to the premises they are watching the game in.

A spokesman for Essex Police confirmed the celebrations had passed without any major incidents or disorder-related arrests as jubilant fans celebrated peacefully.

She said: “We were not called to any incidents in Head Street and made no arrests.”

Last week the Stonegate Pub Company which runs Walkabout said wellbeing and security was important to them and they would review arrangements after each and every England World Cup game to ensure fans can enjoy the game but also watch it in a safe environment.

Security staff can be seen on videos of the event helping ensure the celebrations stay controlled.
