A MINDLESS gang of youths took pot shots at a bus with a hand held air gun.

The First Essex 65 service was in Turner Road, Colchester, heading towards Highwoods when the driver and passengers onboard heard a cracking noise and noticed glass had been broken on the side of the vehicle.

Witnesses believe a nearby group of youngsters had used an air pistol to shoot at the bus whilst it was on its route.

Fortunately, no-one was injured in the incident but the police were called after the driver had moved a safe distance away from the scene and inspected what had happened.

Operations manager for First Essex in Colchester Steve Hartman said he was stunned at what had happened and was grateful no-one was hurt in the shooting.

He said: “On Friday evening at approximately 8.30pm whilst driving along Turner Road, our driver reported that a nearside window was broken by what looked like a pellet shot from a hand held air pistol being used by a group of youths.

“Our driver continued away from the scene before assessing the damage and checking to ensure there were no injuries sustained to passengers travelling on the bus.

“Thankfully, no injuries were sustained to anyone on the bus at the time.

“The police were called and attended the incident.”

Mr Hartman said he and his colleagues would fully support Essex Police in a bid to try to successfully prosecute the group involved.

He added: “The safety and wellbeing of our customers and staff is paramount.

“We will do everything we can to assist the police in finding and prosecuting the people involved with this mindless criminal activity.”
