A PIECE of a legendary Scottish Queen’s blanket and Buckingham Palace’s original announcement of the end of the First World War are just some of the pieces going under the hammer at a Colchester auction house.

Reeman Dansie has a collection of royal regalia up for grabs ranging from photographs and Christmas cards to official portraits and even pieces of wedding cake from Will and Kate’s wedding. Prince Charles and Camilla and Prince William and Kate Middleton.

The auction is set to grab interest from around the world, particularly after the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle last month.

James Grinter, of Reeman Dansie, said: “We have already had global interest, particularly from America, China and the continent.

“The royal wedding has certainly put people’s mind on this sort of thing. It was such a wonderful occasion and people were so hyped up about it.”

One of the most unusual pieces in the sale is the original announcement of the end of the First World War, which was due to be put outside Buckingham Palace on November 11, 1918.

However, it had to be changed at the last minute when King George V spilt a blot of ink on it when he went to sign in. It has been valued at about £200.

Mr Grinter added: “That announcement will be 100 years old later this year and has a very interesting tale to it.

“It has huge significance and is a terribly emotive piece. The king must have been so excited at that particular moment, thinking: ‘At last the nightmare is over’.

“His hand must have been shaking.”

A pink nightie which belonged to Queen Victoria is also up for grabs and is expected to fetch about £500, as is a 3cm by 6cm piece of Mary, Queen of Scots’ blanket, which is expected to set buyers back a cool £2,000.

A ticket to the Duke of Wellington’s funeral and a birthday card from Princess Diana also feature.

Mr Grinter added: “Queen Victoria’s garment is quite large. She was quite a large lady at this point, not in height but in width.

“And there are some nice, early historic things in the auction.

“The piece of Mary, Queen of Scots’ blanket is very rare. With that sort of date you rarely come across, particularly when it’s material. It’s very interesting.”

The auction will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday at Reeman Dansie in Wyncolls Road, Colchester. Bids will also be taken online and over the phone.
