A NEW club aimed at encouraging more girls to get creative with technology is to launch in Colchester.

The girls' only Creative Code Club begins at Signals media centre from June 14 from 5pm to 7pm and will run for six weeks.

Youngsters at the after-school club will learn to code, make their own video games and experiment with digital creativity - all under the guidance of Signals' expert digital tutors.

The workshop is for girls aged ten to 14.

Signals, based in St Runwald Street, Colchester, wants to help address the gender imbalance in the technology industry, where women currently only represent about 17 per cent of the workforce.

Signals director Rachel Hipkiss said: “Creative Code Club is a part of our larger work engaging young people in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) skills through digital creativity and also helping combat the digital divide which prevents those without access to technology having the same opportunities as those with.

"We ran our first girls only coding workshops during British Science Week and were blown away with the interest, so we’re really excited to put together this exciting program of digital creative activities specifically for girls.”
