EXCUSE the pun but isn’t it blindingly obvious if you can’t see, you should not drive.

The idea of sanctioning anyone to drive a two tonne machine with the potential to kill when they can’t see is insanity.

And yet, that is how it is.

Drivers can pass their test at 17 and can then drive for the rest of their lives without anyone checking their eyesight.

Worse than that, drivers over 70 can fill out their own form to say they are fit to drive.

There are some people who self police, those responsible members of society who say: “I am not safe to drive” and simply stop.

Of course, it is less convenient but they do it.

There are others, however, who are selfish and put their own convenience ahead of other people’s safety.

Colin Horsfall killed Cassie McCord when she was 16.

He failed a sight test three days before he drove into her.

That is now his legacy. And that has caused enduring and unrelenting pain to her family.

The law must change.

Sight tests must be introduced at regular intervals and if drivers fail, they must lose their licence.

It is so simple and so obvious.

Of course, those who have corrected sight through contact lenses or glasses will be fine.

It is time for the Government to get tough.

Forget the danger of losing votes from disgruntled drivers, just do the right thing.

It will save lives, it will save sorrow.

So who has the common sense and the courage to ensure it happens?
