A MOTORIST caught drink driving has been given a 18-month ban from the roads.

James Watts was involved in a crash in Barrack Street, Colchester, in February close to where police officers were carrying out speed checks.

When they arrived at the scene, Watts, 28, was thought to be unsteady on his feet and when breathalysed, was found to have 66mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35.

He admitted drink driving when he appeared at Colchester Magistrates' Court.

Watts, of Munnings Way, Lawford, said he had only consumed two alcoholic drinks at a friend's house but had misjudged how strong they were.

As well as the driving ban, he was fined £200 and must pay £85 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.
