PEDESTRIANS need to be kept safe from cars careering through a car park wall, it has been said.

A 73-year-old man crashed his sports car through a wall and into an underpass last week.

It is thought the high-end 2014 car, a Porsche Targa 4s, was parked in a car park in Crouch Street before it crashed though a wall and dropped onto the underpass.

Thankfully no-one was injured, but High Steward of Colchester, Sir Bob Russell, fears it could have ended badly.

He said a similar incident happened a few years ago, and it must not happen again.

He said: “This is not the first time a car has crashed through this car park wall.

“Fortunately on each occasion there were no pedestrians using the underpass below the wall.

“If there had been, then we would be looking at potentially serious injuries or even fatalities.”

Sir Bob said the company needed to assure residents the area would be made safe.

He added: “The owners of the car park must be held legally responsible for not taking appropriate measures to ensure the wall cannot be hit by vehicles using their car park.

“I am surprised that after the first time the wall was demolished they did not put in barriers to prevent cars crashing into the wall.

“Officialdom must now insist that safety barriers are installed to stop a further incident.

“Next time the outcome could be far more serious.”

The Gazette tried to contact the owners of the car park.

We contacted Kemsley LLP, who manages the Blackburn House office building, asking to be put in touch with the owner.

Unfortunately the paper did not hear back in time for publication.

The driver of the car was taken to Colchester General Hospital for a check-up.

Essex Police are still looking for anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has dash cam footage, to call 101 asking for PC Elizabeth Ferris at Stanway Roads Policing Unit.
