A RESIDENT has asked for a bus stop to be moved from outside his home, as it is causing him breathing problems.

Barry Wild, who has lived in Queen Elizabeth Way in Colchester for 35 years, said buses pass his house every 10 minutes.

Mr Wild, 71, said the bus stop used to be on the corner of Monkwick Avenue, but was moved outside his home.

For the past few years it has caused him health problems.

He said: "I have got lung and heart problems and the buses are pumping out fumes right outside my drive.

"The houses here have windows in the kitchen with vents which you cannot shut.

"The council said it cannot do anything as it costs money, but what does it cost to move a bus stop 500 yards down the road?

"There is no harm in having to walk a bit further to catch the bus."

Ward councillor Dave Harris (Lab) tried to get the bus stop moved since last year.

He has also been told by Essex County Council the bus stop cannot be moved.

Mr Wild added: "I have difficulty breathing and if I'm in the kitchen and the buses are turning up every 10 minutes the fumes get blown into the house.

"We considered putting something in the vents to stop it but you aren't allowed to do that, the only other thing they could do is to install new windows in the kitchen with vents you can shut."

An Essex Highways spokesman said the bus stop is not directly outside a property.

They said: "Indeed houses along this road are set back from the pavement and there is a broad verge between the pavement and the road.

"To move the bus stop further away from houses would disadvantage bus users and cost significant sums of public money.

"Government funding for cleaner, greener buses may help the general situation and there may be more practical solutions to this particular resident’s concerns, which we are happy to work with Dave Harris on.”
