AN historic former gym which is set to be taken on by a popular theatre has risen from the ashes following a devastating fire.

The Mercury Theatre is currently in talks with Colchester Council about taking out a temporary two-year lease on the former Garrison Gym.

The 19th century building, which has been renamed The Abbey Field Centre, was transferred to the council in 2010 from the Ministry of Defence.

It was hoped it would be used to benefit Colchester residents, but in 2013 the building was severely damaged in a blaze.

Since 2016 the council has undertaken extensive works to restore the building, including new flooring, heating lighting and the installation of solar panels.

The theatre plans to use the building while its own venue, at Balkerne Gate, undergoes an extensive £8.8 million rebuild.

The site will be used for rehearsal space and community programmes.

A process to find a permanent tenant for the building will run over the next 18 months, allowing time for interested groups to consider plans and funding.

An open afternoon will be held in the next few months to allow people to view the renovations.

The former gym will be available for hire later in the year, working around the theatre's rehearsal and programme.

Tina Bourne, councillor responsible for housing, said: "This building doesn't just have a big part in the area's history, but thanks to our work to bring it back into use it has a big role in its future too.

"I am delighted that we are nearing the end of what has been a long and complicated project and I am excited about the long term potential this amazing building has for the community."
