Brentwood Half Marathon has been cancelled.

The run was due to take place tomorrow, but due to the forecast of snow organisers have decided to call it off.

A statement from Bob Davey, race director, reads: "We are very sorry to say that the Brentwood Half Marathon scheduled for Saturday 18th March has been cancelled.

"This is the first time in 37 years that this has happened. We have taken advice from our Race Referee, The British Association of Road Races and our Medics.

"We have been out since early this morning and the weather is very bad.

"There is a strong potential for snow and ice underfoot but the exceptionally low air temperature and strong winds make the temperature feel much lower.

"It would not have been pleasant conditions for even the most prepared runners and some parts of the course are relatively high and exposed.

"We also have to think of the over 300 helpers (some of whom are quite young) that turn out on the day and have the disadvantage of having to stay in one place!

"We would be placing them at considerable risk.

"We recognise that many of you have a lot of sponsorship on the back of this event and hope that your sponsors will see that this is a totally unique and unpredictable situation.

"We are very sad for our sponsors who have invested not only a lot of money but a massive amount of time and preparation.

"Sportstiks have produced some fantastic medals and trophies and have made the event more connected than ever before.

"The event takes nearly a year to organise and with the road closures and other necessary admin it will not be possible or simple to reschedule.
Please bear with us for a couple of days as we sort out all the loose ends that this produces and we will be in touch.!
