IT wasn't meant to happen this way. 

Forecasters predicted Colchester would be unlikely to see further snow fall until later today but steady showers have taken hold this morning. 

Essex Weather Centre experts have now issued an updated forecast which states today will remain "bitterly cold with a continuation of snow showers".

It adds: "Snow will become more persistent for a time, but perhaps becoming drier from the south and east late in the day.

"Further local accumulations are possible."

Today's maximum temperature is -2°C.

Tonight will turn very cold and windy, with snow easing away through the evening.

Residents can also expect a widespread severe frost leading to ice. 

The maximum temperature will be -4°C.

Tomorrow will see further snow moving north of the county during the day but strong winds with bring a less bitter cold feel. 

However further significant snow accumulations are possible.

There will be a maximum temperature of -1°C.
