Tendring: Free parking call is turned down

A call for free parking for Tendring residents has been rubbished.

Stephen and Danny Mayzes want every household to get a parking permit for council-owned car parks if they pay their council tax in full at the start of the year.

The Rush Green district councillors also want two-hour on-street parking in town centres instead of the current one-hour limit.

Council leader David Lines described it as a populist move which could cost up to £1 million and add 12 per cent to the council tax bill.

But Cllr Stephen Mayzes said it was a win-win situation He continued: "We believe residents and taxpayers are entitled to park freely on council-owned land in which they pay rates towards.

"This can only be a good thing for residents as the money we bring in from parking tickets and fees only pay for the attendants and is not invested in the district.

"Residents who want a permit will pay the council a full year of tax, saving the council money for having to chase residents not up to date with payments."

Mr Lines said the council already collects close to 98 per cent of council tax so the idea would have little effect as an incentive.

Welcome back Laurel and Hardy. Are these two joined at the hip? They only seem to have one idea between them at any time.
At least the silent one doesn't come out with phrases like, "in which they pay rates toward".

It does appear that parking is one of the biggest issues people in Clacton have.
I heard that there are plans to put more bays along the seafront and then restrict parking all the way along from end to end.

Two hour street parking is actually a good idea worth considering. You don't have to do your shopping or whatever flat out and looking over your shoulder for the dreaded traffic wardens.

Actually John I would disagree there I think it will make it worse. If you think about it you have between 9am to 5pm an 8 hour time slot. Say for instance you have 100 places that means 800 cars can park in the day if they stay for just an hour. If you make parking for 2 hours it means parking capacity will go down to 400 places.

I really like to listen to fresh ideas from our new tender tendring councillors. their fresh ideas are bursting at the seems, it seems. Oh how i wish the ideas would work, unlike in real time most of the great ideas put foreward from mister and master Mayzes.
At this point i have to stop and wonder if in fact the dynamic duo actually pay anything towards the councill tax at the abode they live.
All of us would like to live rent or councill tax free at our mums or dads place, but in real tearms we dont, so we have to pay, and pay a lot of money too.
Do they...........
free v i p tickets...lol...

I don't pay council tax (still live with the 'rents and a college kid) but I know if I did, then any form of increase in tax would be annoying, but a 12% increase is **** ridiculous and I can't see how the two dimwits (or should I say Stephen, as Danny doesn't seem to have a voice of his own) can even think it's a half-decent idea, let alone a bloody 'win-win situation' as he has stated.
Can somebody please slap some commonsense into those boys?

Brilliant idea, NOT! What happens to those who just cannot afford to pay their Council Tax in advance, they are immediately disadvantaged. As for 2 hour parking you can get that in the Water Glade, and to my way of thinking if your intending to be parked for 2 hours your not just popping in for something on the run.
Why did'nt these two clowns leave town with the Circus.

Curses! Defeated by Clackers again! He's good at maths though .

Well, lets be honest, none of the councillors have to worry about paying for parking in Clacton town centre anyway as they have free parking facilities.
